Key Features
Electric coffee grinders have a small motor that turns the grind wheels or blades. Most electric grinders have a single, push-button control switch, which when pressed provides a continuous grind or when pressed and depressed quickly can provide a pulse-like feature. Many more expensive models may have settings that determine the exact length of grinding time and control over the degree of fineness of the ground beans. Manual coffee grinders (often called mills) work by turning a grinding mechanism by hand. Although generally slower they do allow more control over the grind of the beans.
Blade grinders are the most affordable type of electrical grinder and use a small sharp metal blade spinning at a very high and consistent speed to grind the coffee beans. This blade pulverizes the coffee bean repeatedly until the desired consistency is reached. The fineness of the grounds is only determined by the length of time the cutting blades are spinning. Burr grinders are generally more expensive and grind using a method that is recommended by most coffee connoisseurs. Burr grinders work by stripping off slivers of the coffee bean; this exposes a lot more of the bean surface area for the water to extract the coffee flavor from. This method of grinding also produces a lot less heat which further helps promote and maintain the durability of the aromatics and flavors that make a great tasting coffee.

Despite formidable new challengers, Rocky will go the distance. After 19 years, still one of the best burr grinders on the market. |
