In the past, there were few reporters who could overlook former AsFour designer Kai Kuhne's bizarre behavior. But after the German art-world darling took a one-year hiatus in 2007 to clean up his act, people are focusing on his work rather than on his personal life. His sharply tailored dresses and intricately cut separates in neutral hues are drawing positive response. Style.com noted the change for his fall 2008 show: "Kai Kuhne's work has sometimes been upstaged by dramatics in his personal life. But if there was any drama today, it was in the clothes: They were impeccable." The additional income from former Proenza Schouler backer Markus Hoefels has added to the designer's forward momentum.
